WHY DO GIRLS HAVE BETTER MEMORY THAN BOYS...!!!
This question implies that girls do indeed have better memories than boys – and in fact this ain’t necessarily so! It depends on a whole lot of factors. It also brings up the thorny question of whether male brains are different to female brains. So there is not a simple answer to this question but there are a few very interesting topics to explore to begin to get an idea of what the answer might be. Here is a short summary of the latest thinking on these topics.
In general, during a baby's development, the brain is influenced by the hormones that are present in the womb and also the chromosomes formation within the cells. These hormones influence the development of the brain, and cause it to become either a girl's brain or a boy's brain. Some people believe that girls' brains have more connections between the two sides of the brain than boys' brains do; and that the right side (hemisphere) is dominant in girls whereas the left is dominant in boys thus making girls have a greater capacity for language skills than boys, and boys better at spatial orientation than girls. Of course, all of these differences are broad generalizations and there are endless examples of contradictions to these ideas. For example you probably know a woman who does not have to turn the map upside down to get herself pointing in the right direction when on a journey! It also does not mean that one gender is smarter than the other. They are different.
We also cannot say that boys have better memory than girls or vice-versa however there is a little evidence that suggests (not proven) that girls may have better memory for emotional and verbal events, whereas boys may have better memory for spatial and non-verbal events. Like any human being, male or female, we will remember what most interests us and pay little attention to anything that doesn’t. That emotional connection to events make a lot of difference to what is remembered and how it is remembered.
A very interesting piece of research conducted by Camarata and Woodcock found that females are far more competent at processing information when they have a time limit than boys. This is not the same as remembering information – only to do with making immefdiate use of the information they are taking in. Here is what the researchers said. "We found very minor differences in overall intelligence. But if you look at the ability of someone to perform well in a timed situation, females have a big advantage," "It is very important for teachers to understand this difference in males and females when it comes to assigning work and structuring tests. To truly understand a person's overall ability, it is important to also look at performance in un-timed situations. For males, this means presenting them with material that is challenging and interesting, but is presented in smaller chunks without strict time limits."
"'Processing speed' doesn't refer to reaction time or the ability to play video games," Camarata said. "It's the ability to effectively, efficiently and accurately complete work that is of moderate difficulty. Though males and females showed similar processing speed in kindergarten and pre-school, females became much more efficient than males in elementary, middle and high school."
However, the study also found that males consistently outperformed females in some verbal abilities, such as identifying objects, knowing antonyms and synonyms and completing verbal analogies, debunking the popular idea that girls develop all communication skills earlier than boys. Just when we thought we knew one straight fact!
So, what can we say about girls having better memories than boys? We can say with certainty that we don’t think this is the case as a generalisation. Some girls will be able to remember more and some won’t! Some boys will remember more and some won’t. It all depends!
